The island of Poros, Πόρος, the ancient Kalureia, is a perfect place from which to explore the Islands of the Saronic Gulf. Poros is actually consists of two islands and connected by a channel – Kalavria and Sferia. Today they are connected by a slender isthmus, cut by a canal for small boats and rejoined by a road bridge.
Poros, called Calaureia in ancient times, was the island of Poseidon, god of the sea. At just 31 square kilometres, most of the Poros island is covered with thin woodland and macchia.
